GPRS / EDGE

Connect to the Internet quickly and easily using your mobile phone or modem. Even better, you pay according to the amount of data transferred, making it cost-effective no matter how long you stay online (prepaid users pay a token hourly fee).

What you need

  • A GSM telephone which supports GPRS technology, or a mobile modem
  • Any of the wide range of O2 Email tariffs, such as the O2 Data Nonstop tariff
  • A personal computer, notebook, or PDA
  • Connection from the computer to your telephone via computer cable, infrared port (IrDA), or Bluetooth

EDGE in the O2 network

EDGE in the O2 network

connects your PC or laptop to the Internet via your mobile phone just like GPRS - but three or four times faster.

GPRS connection options

  • GPRS
This type of connection provides the most frequent access to standard web services (browsing, email) and is automatically included with the activation of any data tariff. This service is appropriate for the majority of users who are protected from unsolicited Internet communications (firewall).
  • GPRS / O2 GPRS Static IP Address
Setting of security parameters is identical to the standard GPRS service, except in this case your mobile telephone is always assigned the same IP address. To activate this O2 GPRS Static IP Address, you must contact the Customer Care Center *11 or speak with a specialist in any brand store. This service is charged according to the current pricelist.
  • GPRS Special
This is one of the most open modes of connecting to the Internet. With GPRS Special you can take advantage of Internet network services, although you will not be secured against unsolicited traffic (for example, connection without limits enables the formation of VPN tunnels for secure access to company networks). This type of Internet connection is recommended for more advanced users. To take full advantage of the possibilities we offer the O2 Data Nonstop tariff, where a flat monthly fee gets you 24-hour unlimited access.
  • GPRS Special / O2 GPRS Static IP Address
As the name suggests, this option combines the features of the previous two: you get Internet access completely without limits, while using the same IP address every time you connect. We remind users that this open Internet does not impose restrictions on unsolicited traffic, and should therefore be used by customers who are experienced with the Internet.

How GPRS works

Data transfer

Files and data are divided into a number of individual data packets, which are assigned to the delivery address and sent to the user in a series. Telephones and other devices can remain connected to the data network constantly, as the connection is billed only by the amount of data transmitted.

Connection to the O2 GPRS network

Mobile devices connect to the O2 GPRS network across access points called APN (Access Point Name), which you must designate in your computer. The name of a particular APN must also be authorized for use by your SIM card, and must correspond to the name of the APN used by your computer or mobile device. The individual versions of the GPRS service make use of different APNs, as listed below.

Service type and corresponding APN

Name of the service APN name
GPRS internet
GPRS / O2 GPRS Static IP Address internet.s
GPRS Special internet.open
GPRS Special / O2 GPRS Static IP Address internet.open.s
